Embellish Color Trends Challenge - Circles

 

 

 

Hey everyone!  How are you doing?  Can you believe it's October tomorrow?  I mean seriously ---what the hell?  I still have pots of summer flowers and herbs on our back deck and in front of the house.  It looks so ridiculous in the neighborhood considering our trees have changed colours and some have dropped all their leaves.  I haven't even picked the apples off our trees.  I guess we have alot of fall clean up on our hands this weekend if we don't want our patio table and chairs to be buried under snow.  Because it's coming.  This is Calgary afterall. 

 

 

 

 

Anywho......I hope you're up for joining us on the newest Embellish Magazine Challenge which is to use CIRCLES as well as the colours shown above. 

 

I made my little embellishment with 1 3/8" circles and the trick is to make sure they all meet in the centre with no gap.  I placed a piece of score tape across the back of the 6 circles which still gave me wiggle room to get them all placed evenly.  I used more tape and a few dots of Mono Multi glue to secure it once I had it shaped the way I wanted it.

Loonie Stampers - Get Flakey

 

 

 

We're getting FLAKEY!  Maria challenged us to use snow flakes in any way we wished.  This is great for me because it means I already have one Christmas card made!!  Hey.....it's a start.  In fact, I think I will try to work on doing at least one Christmas card a week from now till mid December.  I might just help me take the pressure off when the time comes to get them in the mail. 

 

 

 

 

This one is even ideal for mailing as those buttons are small and there's no bulky bow.  The stamp is Good Cheer by Ali Edwards {{Technique Tuesday}}.  It's one of my all time favorite stamp sets!

Technique Tuesday Stamp Party!

 

Hi everyone!  Welcome to the Technique Tuesday Stamp Party!

This month, the Stamping Techs are coming together for a stamp party of sorts.  Each of us dug into our stashes of Technique Tuesday stamps this month and grabbed the newest Technique Tuesday stamp set we own. For today’s hop, we are using those stamps.

I used Girl on the Go which is one of my newest unused stamp sets.  I haven't ordered from the latest releases but I must get on that.  I was a bit MIA in the craft room during the summer but I can't wait to get my hands on some of the fabulous new stamps!  

 

We have a niece who lives in Texas and she is turning 14 in October so I wanted to make her birthday card.  I chose this stamp because that could be her with her tall blond self and cute little white fluffy dog.  Ha.   The sentiment is from Kids are Cool by Ali Edwards.  I heat embossed it in white which pops right off of the kraft coloured card base don'tcha think?

Loonie Stampers - Buttons

 

 

Hey all.  Today we're creating with BUTTONS....... Dee's choice for our challenge this week.  A couple of weeks ago I had seen this adorable framed pumpkin and I wanted to create my own button pumpkin when I sat down to make my card.  Check out her little ghost too.  Ahh..dorable. 

 

I'm pretty sure I can't draw a pumpkin very well.  When I asked Mike what it looked like when I had the buttons all adhered to the orange patterned paper he said a "bean"?  I thought he was joking since it was obviously a pumpkin (to me) but he wasn't.  Sure that was before I added the green stem or the sentiment but now it just looks odd to me.  I think he might have said something about a round heart too?  Thanks for that Mike!!!  Ha. 

 

 

 

 

Oh do you like my cute little ceramic pumpkin in the background?  Steph found those for $2 each at Superstore so of course I had to run out and buy some too!  {{Copycat}}.

Embellish Color Trends Challenge - Paint or Mist

 

 

 

Heellllooooo! 

 

Our newest Embellish Color Trends challenge is here.  I swear I did not notice until right this minute that my "turquoise" is soooo wrong for this challenge.  I truly just had turquoise in my head but I should have checked the inspiration photo one more time before actually making my card.  Whoops.

The "trend" that you need to incorporate when you tackle this color challenge is to add PAINT to your creation.  You can paint the edges of your card, paint embellishments, stamp with paint or use a spray mist.  Anything goes.  I painted the chipboard cage a light grey and then distressed it with cream paint over top.  I just used acrylic paints from Michaels. 

 

 

 

 

So besides my color being {alot} off I was happy with final result and especially happy that I finally got around to using the bird and cage die.  They are awesome dies don'tcha think? 

 

I stamped the musical notes from Glee (Technique Tuesday stamps) using acrylic paint as well and it gives it a vintage-y look and a great texture.

Loonie Stampers Challenge

 

 

 

ETA:  OK...let's try this again.  I "think" I got it to work so I can get the photos of my card posted.  I ended up taking new photos, editing them and posting those.  Some how the other photos were "tiff"s rather than jpeg.  Wish I could say I knew how that happened but I don't even know what a "tiff" is.  Ha.  Anywho.....I'm a day late and a dollar short but here's the card!
 

This week Regan chose this fantastic photo as our inspiration for this weeks challenge.  I actually have to say I think the inspiration photos are alot more fun for me than just colours.  Plus, it's always just nice to see gorgeous photos.  That's why I like hanging out on Pinterest too. 

 

 

 

 

My photos probably are coming across huge on your screen.  For some reason I can't upload these pics from iPhoto (it's like they are invisible when I go to upload them) so I had to do a copy and paste by emailing them to myself.  I hope this is just a one time glitch.  I'll find out at my next apple class.

Jadeite Fakeite

 

OK.....there's one thing you should know when buying Jadite/Jadeite and that is there are a bunch of fakes and reproductions out there.  Buyer beware....says the girl who got duped.  Steph and I were out at an Antiques and Collectibles show yesterday and it was alot of fun and there was some really neat things plus I got to learn a bunch too.  

 

 

I came upon a table with a sea of green and oh my.....my heart started racing which probably clouded my judgement.  I collect Jadite and I'm a lucky girl to have 159 pieces of Fire King Jadite already so I should know real Jadite when I see it.  The problem is I haven't ever seen fake Jadite and I certainly have never seen the spice shakers and canisters before.  So I dove in and came home with a bunch of pieces.  AND THEN I researched.  Smart right?  Yeah, I know.  Luckily, some of these pieces are the real deal but first let me show you the fake-ys.

 

 

These are (probably made in China) fakes of the Roman Arch spice shakers.  There was an original set of 6 made and sold but they didn't have these names specifically and the font is slightly different.   You should be able to click on all the pictures to make them bigger. 

 

 

 

Here is a side view of the roman arch.  Also see how shiny and new the lid is?  Fake. 

 

 

 

Next up are these ribbed shakers.  I'll show you a real one side by side with the fake down below.  The REAL 4 piece set has Salt, Pepper, Flour and Sugar in it and would sell for about $250.  Check out this eBay set for sale.  

 

 

 

Now how cute are these little square ones?  So adorable.  Is it bad to say that I still love all my fakes?  The green is gorgeous.  I may not display them with the real deal collection but I'm sure I'll find a way to use them either in my spice pantry or even my craft room.  The ribbed ones above would make cute flower bud vases. 

 

 

 

And the last fakes are these canister jars which will be easy to put to use.  Love that little powdered sugar jar.  The "grits" should have been a dead giveaway too.  I think that is what can be called a "Fantasy" item.  Meaning the people that make the fakes didn't even create it based on an original on the market but rather made it up.    When I got home my hubby said everything is too shiney and new and he could tell none were real.  For all the fake/reproductions I spent $115.  That might seem like alot but it doesn't phase me since I still love them and still will use them.  Of course I'd jump at the chance with replacing them with the real ones.  Maybe some day.  

 

 

 

Now onto the REAL Jadite that I made quite the score on.  I paid $100 for all the items you see in the photo below.  The 4x4 "leftover" or fridgies are listed for $35-40 each in my Jadite reference book.  The TEA canister is listed for $175 - $200 but that would be in perfect shape.  My lid is a bit banged up and the TEA font is faded slightly.  The unmarked canister to the right is listed at $80.  The extra lids are chippy but good to have just in case.   The CEREAL canister is very heavy and I'm 97.5% sure it's real.  I think that would be perfect used on the side of the stove for utensils like wooden spoons, spatulas etc. 

 

 

 

The salt shaker is listed in the Jadite reference book at $50-$55 dollars.  Below is a side by side comparison to the fake.  The left one is absolutely real Jadite.  Notice the lines around it are more defined?  Also, besides the obvious difference in the shape and colour of the lids do you see the beaded rim on the neck of the bottle where the lid on the salt twists down to meet?  That is missing on the fakes.  The real one feels much heavier and has a more streamlined look about it.  The colour is richer.  I love everything about it. 

 

 

 

So there you have it.  My "not so Thrifty but I love them none-the-less Finds" of the weekend.  The thrifty finds of the year are sure slowing down with Fall approaching.  I have picked up a few things here and there over the summer weeks and I will show some of that in a post in the next couple of weeks.  Do any of you collect Jadite?  Have you ever come across the fakes or have some in your collection?  Let me know if you have any questions about Jadite.

Loonie Stampers - Green, White & Black

 

 

 

 

Hey Everyone.....we're back for another Loonie Stampers Challenge.  It was my pick this week and I chose Green, White and Black.  I made this card in the middle of summer to be ahead of the game when it came to my turn.  That's about all I was prepared with.  I couldn't find the card until yesterday to take a picture and as I type this it is almost 1:00 am.  Such a procrastinator!  Oh and I had a beotch of a time doing the post.  We downloaded the OS X Lion system to our Mac and now I feel even more lost than I was before.  So either I'm a hopeless dummy (yes) or Typepad does not like Lion.  Sheesh. 

 

 

 

 

So for that reason I'm going to keep it short and sweet!  Oh but I will tell you that Steph and I found out there is an sale at a community hall for antiques and collectibles.  Hopefully I'll be back on Sunday with a Thrifty finds post.

Embellish Color Challenge - STRIPES

 

 

 

Hi Everyone......Welcome to the newest Embellish Magazine Challenge.   As you can see in the challenge image above the colours are black, blue, kraft and red.  The theme to incorporate is STRIPES.  {{I love how the bounce of the girl in the photo is captured.  It's just so carefree and natural.}}  

 

 

 

 

 The inspriation to make the stripes the way I did came from a photo I snapped with my iPhone this summer.  There was a van that was parked on the street near the parking lot at my work place and I thought the pin striping would be a cool idea for a card.  Here's the pic of that van.....

 

 

 

I just cut some strips of cardstock at an angle and matched them up to create the portion that extends up.  

 

 

 

 

The hemp cord is glued onto the blue strip and does not wrap around as I wanted to keep the white block flat on the card base.

Loonie Stampers Challenge - Back to School

 

 

 

My wonderful Loonie friends and I took a summer break from our little challenge but now we are back and starting up again.  I missed these girls and I think we are all ready to get back at it and get creative!  Yay.  Do you like our new little logo?  It's so cute!  We have Dee to thank for it.  Now I just need to figure out how to put it on my sidebar.  Yikesa. 

 

 

 

 

Wendy chose our challenge for the day which is "Back to School".  Very fitting for this week indeed.  I told my niece, Ryann, who started Kindergarten yesterday that I have a few "teacher" cards for her to give to her teacher throughout the year.  I'm sure she will enjoy giving them.  My sister told me that Ryann asked her teacher if she would be her best friend.  Apparently she didn't make friends during the first day as she's somewhat shy when she first meets people.  Kinda breaks my heart but so sweet too.

 

I ordered this scallop edged ribbon and the apple ribbon-slide online.  PERFECT for a Back to School theme.  

 

 

 

 

For some fun news.  We'd like to introduce you to Rhonda who is just crazy enough to agree to join us on Fridays for our challenges.  {{Background.......Wendy and Rhonda have been BFF's for many many years and I'm lucky to be able to call her my friend too.  She hosts our card parties every month and they are the best!!}  Welcome Rho!  We are excited!  Now lets go check everyones creations.
